Fajã de São João is located on the south side of the island of São Jorge, in the parish of Santo Antão, municipality of Calheta, on a long and narrow strip of land at the foot of the cliff.
This fajã has few permanent inhabitants, but in the months of August and September, many return to their homes for the harvest, as well as many emigrants and tourists.
Typical houses in farmstone, with windows of three guillotines and small subsistence agriculture productions, make this fajã one of the most picturesque on the island.
Fajã de São João is one of the main ex-libris of the Jorgense landscape and integrates, with the others, since 2016, the restricted list of UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves having also been distinguished with an honorable mention in the National Landscape Prize of 2020, in the context of the 3rd National Conference of Architecture and Landscape.
In 2017 the municipality of Calheta took the Fajã de São João contest in one of the largest tourist promoters, the 7 Wonders of Portugal – Remote Villages.
This property, consisting of 2 articles, one urban and the second rustic, is located in the center of the fajã, near the hermitage dedicated to São João and whose framing of its small central tower, makes it one of the most photographed on the island.
