Parish of Paranhos
The Parish of Paranhos is one of the urban parishes in the city of Porto that, even today, preserves the greatest popular traditions.
The uses and customs of Paranhos are the portrait, on the one hand, of its physical characteristics of the past, of its fertile soils that provided its rural nature and, on the other hand, of its location that traced, for centuries, the paths of the people. from the North who visited the then neighboring city of Porto.
The current streets of Costa Cabral and Amial represented in the past, the main access roads to Guimarães and Braga, respectively.
Until 1945, anyone wishing to enter the city was forced to pay the indirect municipal tax, with the Circunvalação road serving as a border marker for this purpose.

The church of Paranhos was built by wealthy farmers in the 10th century, around which couples and farms were born.
As these continued to grow, they gave rise to places, among them Regado, Agueto, Couto, Igreja, Lamas, Tronco, Carvalhido, and Vale, these already existed in 1689.
In 1758 there were already more places, including Amial, Bouça, Cruz da Regateira, Antas, Travessa, Azenha and Cabo. There were also the places of Casal, Fonte, Paranhos, Telheiro, Estrada, Monte Velho, Eira, Padrão, Pereira, Tojo, Aval, Cortes, Regueiras and Asprela.
In the 50s of the 20th century, the General Hospital of São João, formerly known as the City School Hospital, was inaugurated in the place of Asprela, as the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto was installed there.
As the number of inhabitants grew incessantly, the parish was transformed in terms of landscape. Many of the existing fields gave way to the construction of buildings, not only residential, but also institutional. It is therefore, in the 20th century, that a parish of urban nature begins to be born, with the paving of streets and paths, bringing the parish closer to the city center through the improvement of roads, which resulted in a greater population mobility.
Despite its urban profile, even today we can discover the pleasures of a parish that was once made up of villages. We can find people who sell vegetables from the garden, those who sell flowers at their door, the grocery store and the bakery where the customer is known, watch and participate in the procession in honor of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, drink water in one of the many fountains that are still resisting change, that is, markedly rural customs.
Paranhos offers a double wealth: living and being in the city and enjoying its services and facilities, but at the same time enjoying a bucolic tranquility, difficult to find in urban areas.
